The Three-lined Snake, commonly referred to as the Red-spotted Keelback or Red-striped Oviparous Snake, features a pale reddish-brown dorsal side with four dark brown longitudinal stripes extending to the tail. These stripes appear fragmented in the anterior section, and the head displays three inverted “V”-shaped patterns. The ventral side is yellowish-brown, densely covered with black square markings.
As a semi-aquatic species, the Three-lined Snake typically reaches a total length of around 800 mm. It inhabits low-altitude regions near rivers, lakes, ponds, and their vicinities. Active during sunny days, it preys on frogs, tadpoles, loaches, and small fish. This ovoviviparous snake is non-venomous and is also known regionally as the Water Snake or Water Longworm. It is listed under China’s “Three-Value” (beneficial, economically significant, and scientifically valuable) protected wildlife category. For captive care, provide a suitably sized, well-ventilated enclosure with appropriate substrate such as coconut fiber. Maintain temperatures between 25-30°C using heating pads, and humidity at 50%-60%. Feed primarily fresh small fish, loaches, or frogs in moderate quantities to prevent food spoilage. Minimize disturbances to avoid stress, and maintain cleanliness by promptly removing waste.
