The Gargoyle Gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) is an easy-to-care-for nocturnal, omnivorous species native to New Caledonia, an island group between Australia and Fiji. They are arboreal creatures, inhabiting humid forests and maquis, where they can be found on shrubs, saplings, and strand vegetation.
Gargoyle geckos derive their name from the bony horn-like protrusions on their skulls. Their coloration ranges from light to dark gray, with patches of orange or red arranged in various patterns.
These geckos mature at 15-18 months, with a length of 8-10 inches and a weight of 45-65g. Their average lifespan is 15-20 years with proper care. A fun fact: unlike most geckos, gargoyles lack eyelids and use their tongues to clean their eyes.
Gargoyle geckos have toes covered with millions of tiny ‘hairs’ called setae, allowing them to climb vertical and smooth surfaces. They also have a prehensile tail that functions as a fifth foot. If threatened, they can autotomize their tail to escape, which can regrow over time.
Known for their mild temperament and easy care requirements, Gargoyle geckos are ideal for beginners in reptile keeping.
